Self-cutting screws (officially referred to in national standards as "thread-cutting screws") are a type of tapping screw specifically designed for thick-walled, hard, or brittle materials. They actively cut an internal thread through cutting flutes or edges on the screw tip, rather than forming threads by displacing material.

Working Principle and Applications

· Working Principle: A pilot hole must be pre-drilled before installation. As the screw is driven in, the cutting edges on the tip cut a matching internal thread like a tap, rather than forcibly displacing the material.

· Applications: Specifically used for materials that conventional tapping screws cannot handle, such as thicker metal sheets, hard alloys, brittle plastics, or cast iron parts.

· Key Characteristics: Typical "tough core, hard shell" structure – the surface is very hard (case-hardened) to enable cutting, while the core remains tough to prevent breakage.
